Over millennia climate changes turned it into a cracked, barren land of mountains and gorges, a vast, arid semi-desert stretching over more than 400 000 square kilometres in the centre of South Africa. It creates the impression of a hostile deserted land hardly supporting any life, but it is full of life if you know where to look.
